To relieve stress, injury and illness, Volunteer Ministers use Scientology assist techniques. Developed by L. Ron Hubbard, assists operate on the principle that one tends to withdraw mentally or spiritually from an injured or painful area. By restoring communication with the affected area, one can greatly speed the healing process. An assist is an exact series of directions or a sequence of actions taken to alleviate a present time discomfort.
It is not a substitute for medical treatment but complements it. There are also assists to orient a confused or distraught individual to his present environment.
Following the Tsunami of December 2004, Scientology Volunteer Ministers from Australia, the United Kingdom, France, the United States, Germany, Italy and other countries traveled to the main disaster zones in Southeast Asia, where they have administered several thousand assists to survivors.
News of the success of the Volunteer Minister recovery actions spread rapidly, and now thousands of others have learned and now apply these assist techniques — doctors, nurses, family members, government officials, rescue workers, and others from all walks of life, faiths and nationalities.
